McLaren 650S Spider on Japan’s Hakone Turnpike

The McLaren 650S Spider is a rare, expensive car that only a few drivers will ever have access to. But for those who do get a shot behind the wheel, they’ll have the privilege of experiencing a supercar that can hit 60 mph in less than 3 seconds and doesn’t stop until it’s past the 200 mph mark.

On most public roads, the 650S Spider is too fast to enjoy properly, but what if you had a winding mountain road all to yourself? Perhaps one like Japan’s Hakone Turnpike? Well, that’s the kind of experience the car was made for.

So that’s what McLaren did, bringing a 650S Spider to an empty Hakone Turnpike and turning it loose. The result? About as close as it gets to driving perfection.

Fiat 500s, Jeep Wranglers in global recall

FCA is recalling Fiat 500s to fix a glitch with the clutch release system on some manual transmissions.

Fiat Chrysler is recalling nearly 600,000 Fiat 500 subcompact cars and Jeep Wrangler SUVs worldwide in two actions.

FCA will recall 80,474 Fiat 500s from the 2012 to 2016 model years with manual transmissions globally to fix a glitch with the clutch release system.

FCA said an investigation found that clutch travel could “exceed design parameters,” which can ultimately restrict gear shifts and propulsion. FCA said 0.01 percent of the recalled population had damage.

The recall does not affect cars with turbocharged engines.

No injuries or accidents related to the problem have been reported.

FCA said 39,217 of the cars are in the U.S., while 7,834 are in Canada, 7,155 are in Mexico and 26,268 are elsewhere.

Jeep recall

Additionally, 506,420 Wranglers are being recalled to inspect the clockspring, a part in the steering wheel that aids with airbag deployment.

FCA said in a statement that dust and dirt gathered from off-road driving can “compromise the clockspring and eventually prevent driver-side airbag deployment in a crash.”

Compromised clocksprings will activate the Wrangler’s airbag warning lamp, in which case drivers should notify a dealership, FCA said.

In the U.S., the recall includes 392,464 Wranglers from the 2007-10 model years and 7,435 from the 2011-16 model years with right-hand drive for special duty.

FCA estimates 35,412 of the recalled Wranglers are in Canada, 8,529 are in Mexico and 62,580 are elsewhere.

FCA said it is unaware of any injuries or accidents related to the clockspring issue. It discovered the problem following an investigation.

The automaker said it will install new steering-wheel back covers and steering-column shrouds on the affected SUVs after customers are notified.

Vauxhall will recall some Zafiras in UK on fire risk

The potential fire risk affects Vauxhall Zafiras built between 2005 and 2014.

General Motors’ Vauxhall unit will recall about 235,000 Zafira minivans for repair in the UK to prevent a possible risk of fire caused by a soldered fuse resistor in the vehicles.

The models will be recalled to replace a soldered fuse resistor with a wax fuse resistor, Vauxhall said in a statement today.

Vauxhall said the remedial action was agreed upon with the UK’s Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency.

The decision follows an initial recall of right-hand-drive Zafiras last year to correct what the automaker described as “improper repair of the blower motor resistor and its thermal fuse” which is designed to protect the blower motor system.

The recall covered minivans built between 2005 and 2014 and followed reports of some vehicle fires.

Reuters contributed to this report

Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead, Coupe grab a piece of factory on way out

Rolls-Royce’s Zenith Collection will feature a piece of the production line from the Goodwood U.K. factory, housed in a polished aluminum case on the dash.

All good things must come to an end, as Rolls-Royce is ceasing production of the Phantom Drophead Coupe and Phantom Coupe.

And the last 50 cars — already spoken for — will take mementos with them: pieces of the assembly line where the cars were built.

The Zenith Collection cars will feature a piece of the production line from the Goodwood U.K. factory, housed in a polished aluminum case on the dash.

Each piece will be laser-engraved with the car’s unique identification number, along with the coordinates of that exact part’s location on the assembly line.

“As we begin to write a bold new chapter in Rolls-Royce history, I am delighted to present a Bespoke Collection that so elegantly celebrates two of the world’s rarest and most celebrated luxury goods: Phantom Drophead Coupe and Phantom Coupe,” said Torsten Müller-Ötvös, CEO of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars.

“Phantom Zenith Collection motor cars speak of the marque’s unrelenting commitment to setting and advancing the standard by which all other luxury goods are judged.”

The last 50 cars will have other details that will set them apart from “regular” Coupes and Drophead Coupes, as each will feature laser-etched armrest cappings displaying the locations of the global debuts of the concept versions of each car.

That means that the Phantom Drophead Coupe will feature a Villa D’Este motif, while the Phantom Coupe’s armrests will have laser etchings of Lake Geneva.

Special exterior and interior colors will also be offered in the Zenith Collection cars, with inspiration for the colors drawn from historic models such as the 1930s Rolls-Royce Phantom II Continental and the 1930s Phantom II.

The Zenith Collection Phantom sedan was announced just a couple months ago; the sedan has been in production since 2003, with a new model due in 2017.

GM to compensate crossover buyers for mpg error

GM dealers have resumed U.S. sales of nearly 60,000 crossovers that the company grounded late last week as it rushed to ship revised window stickers.Photo credit: DAVID PHILLIPS

DETROIT — General Motors is hashing out a plan to compensate nearly 170,000 owners of 2016 model large crossovers purchased with window stickers that overstated their fuel economy, just as the first lawsuit over the matter was filed in federal court.

GM wants to respond quickly to soothe hard feelings among customers for what it has called an “inadvertent error” that led it to publish incorrect EPA ratings for the ’16 Chevrolet Traverse, GMC Acadia and Buick Enclave, overstating their fuel economy by 1 to 2 mpg, according to three people with knowledge of the plans.

GM is expected to announce a plan to customers and dealers within a week, the sources said.

Sales resume

Meanwhile, GM was hit on Tuesday with a prospective class-action lawsuit seeking compensation for people who bought crossovers with the inaccurate EPA stickers. The complaint, filed in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, alleges that GM concealed the actual fuel economy of the crossovers and that customers overpaid for them.

Law firm McCuneWright filed the complaint on behalf of Sean Tolmasoff, a Florida resident who purchased a 2016 Chevy Traverse in April. According to the suit, Tolmasoff “would not have purchased the Traverse or would have paid substantially less for it” had GM disclosed the crossover’s accurate fuel economy rating on the window sticker.

McCuneWright was among the firms representing consumers who sued Hyundai and Kia after the companies admitted in 2012 to selling some 900,000 vehicles with inflated fuel economy ratings. Hyundai and Kia attributed the inaccurate ratings to internal procedural errors after an EPA investigation. It agreed to pay up to $395 million to settle the suits.

GM dealers have resumed U.S. sales of the nearly 60,000 crossovers that the company grounded late last week as it rushed to ship revised window stickers. But GM is still working on its message to more than 168,000 customers who have bought one since the ’16 models went on sale last fall.

It’s unclear whether GM’s compensation program will include cash to customers or some other form of payment. Volkswagen AG offered nearly 600,000 customers gift cards and dealership credit as part of a “goodwill package” to compensate them for equipping their diesel cars with defeat devices to cheat emission tests, while it worked on a broader settlement with regulators.

The correct EPA ratings for all-wheel-drive models of all three GM crossovers are 15 mpg city/22 highway/17 combined. The incorrect label showed 17 mpg city/24 highway/19 combined.

The ratings for front-wheel-drive models — 15 mpg city/22 highway/18 combined — also were listed incorrectly on the label.

New hardware

In a statement Wednesday to Automotive News, GM provided more information about how it says the error occurred. The ’16 models were equipped with new “emissions-related hardware,” which required new emissions tests for those vehicles, GM said.

“The fuel economy data from these tests were not captured in calculations made for EPA fuel economy labels … causing 2016 model year fuel economy numbers to be overstated,” it said.

This error was discovered as GM engineers worked on the 2017 model labels, and was quickly reported to the EPA, GM said.

It said, “We continue to work with the EPA on this issue.”

The Original Porsche 718 Could Very Well Be Automotive Perfection

And then there’s its engine sound.

It’s powered by a 1.6-liter four-cylinder with only 170 hp. Built from 1957 until 1962, the original Porsche 718 not only predated the iconic 911 but also had a superior mid-engine setup, as opposed to being butt-engined. But the 718’s true racing brilliancewas also the result of its superior engine build quality, its light weight, and solid handling abilities. For former Porsche works driver Derek Bell, one of his personal regrets was missing out on the chance to drive and race the 718, which won the iconic Targa Florio endurance race back in 1960.

And now he’s finally having his chance behind the wheel of that little Porsche, at the Targa Florio itself. The guys over at Petrolicious were on hand to document Bell’s experience and, well, we can’t stop listening to that engine sound.

Aston Martin, Bonhams offer consumers automotive heritage

1953 Aston Martin DB3S

British automaker Aston Martins is teaming with auction house Bonhams to offer its most loyal consumers a piece of its history.

On Saturday May 21, Bonhams will hold an auction of Aston Martin vehicles headlined by the 1953 DB3S racecar. The ongoing partnership between the two brands is by now a staple of the automotive calendar.

“[Bonhams] is one of the most respected auction houses for classic cars and automotive memorabilia and other related artifacts and have been a partner for years,” said Simon Sproule, vice president and chief marketing officer of Aston Martin. “They were the first partner for us when we did the first auction and they delivered—they deliver.”

A piece of history

This is the 17th year that Bonhams will hold an Aston Martin sale, having not missed an opportunity since the first one in 2000. It will once again take place at Aston Martin Works in Newport Pagnell in Buckinghamshire, England.

1953 Aston Martin DB3S interior

Aston Martin Works is the brand’s historic home and includes a heritage service and restoration facility holding vehicles dating all the way back to the brand’s 1913 beginning. Accordingly, the auction focuses on older, vintage Aston Martins.

The 1953 DB3S is this year’s biggest prize and is projected to sell for between £6-7 million, or around $8.7-10.1 million. Other coveted Aston Martin vehicles, including the James Bond-driven DB10, have recently outperformed their estimates, suggesting that the vehicle could be auctioned off for an even higher price.

The DB3S is one of only 11 work cars built for the World Sportscar Champisonship. It is notable for having been raced by Sir Stirling Moss, Tony Brooks, Peter Collins, Roy Salvadori and Reg Parnell, all icons of British auto racing, and competed at the Mille Miglia, Spa Grand Prix and Nürburgring 1,000kms.

1963 Aston Martin DB4 Series V Vantage Convertible

Joining the DB3S is a 1962 Aston Martin DB4 Convertible estimated to bring in upwards of $2 million and one of just five 1963 Aston Martin DB4 Series V Vantage Convertible with a right-hand-drive. A DB5 Convertible from 1964 and the particularly rare 1968 Aston Martin DB6 “Mark I” Volante will also be auctioned.

“We are very proud of our heritage at Aston Martin, so it is fascinating to hear about the histories of the cars that come up for sale at these auctions,” said Aston Martin President and CEO Dr Andy Palmer in a statement. “Some of our cars have led extremely interesting lives.”

At 17 years running, the auction is by now an anticipated event on the calendar of Aston Martin enthusiasts as it offers them an opportunity to interact with and own a piece of the brand’s history, helping to cement or deepen ties.

1968 Aston Martin DB6 Mk1 Volante

The visibility among Bonhams’ consumers also serves to educate a new consumer segment about the automaker’s history, ensuring that they are considered the next time the consumer is in the market for a sportscar.

Those interested in bidding can register to do so on Bonhams’ Web site.

Automotive auctioneers

Aston Martin’s rarest and most storied vehicles routinely find themselves as coveted lots.

British automaker Aston Martin recently gave consumers one last chance to feel like James Bond.

On Feb. 18, Christie’s celebrated the home video release of “Spectre,” the latest James Bond film, with a themed charity auction fronted by Aston Martin’s DB10. The auction gave Bond fanatics a chance to live their dream, while the spy’s popularity ensured hefty earnings for a good cause.

Bonhams is a partner for automotive auctions to more than just Aston Martin.

British automaker Bentley and Bonhams recently brought worlds together in the name of palliative and hospice care.

The automaker and British pop art legend Sir Peter Blake created a unique vehicle, which Bonhams will auction off in June to raise funds for Care2Save Charitable Trust. Charitable endeavors always reflect well on participants, and this initiative allows Bentley a chance to show off its creativity and vision.

“Classic cars and asset cars have outperformed many other asset classes—art-related, wine, whatever you might like, and certainly conventional assets,” Mr. Sproule said. “The classic car market has brought new customers in and that helps us because when you see the market of the brand reflected through very robust pricing, that helps reinforce the value of the Aston Martin brand.

“It boosts our reputation and courages [consumers] to invest in a new car because they see Aston Martin retains value,” he said. “So it builds us credibility as a treasured brand.”

Some Automotive Firsts

First. We all know what it means. What we often don’t agree about is who can rightfully claim to be first. In the auto business, being first to innovate a new and desirable feature has competitive advantage—or not. It’s possible to be too early, to roll out the “new” before it’s ready or before the market is ready to receive it.

Consider Toyota’s advantage in the hybrid segment with its Prius. There were cars that combined electric and gasoline engines as early as 1896, and several were offered before 1910, but most needed the driver to choose one mode or the other. Toyota was “first” with a modern hybrid that automated the combined operation. But only in Japan, not in America (Honda’s Insight beat it to the punch here). Being early didn’t pay off right away. The world’s biggest car company was playing the long game, establishing its position and dominance years before selling hybrids was profitable. Now, every new hybrid has to start by answering the question: Is it better than a Prius?

At today’s rate of change, technology-based innovations are often only “first” by a few months . . . or not at all. Car companies develop new features hand-in-hand with suppliers, who may have multiple customers. Or the suppliers do the creating. Something that looks unique and fresh in the middle of one model year can be everywhere at the beginning of the next. Apps, especially; no one had Apple CarPlay 18 months ago. Now carmakers without it have to answer, “Why not?”

It was not always thus. Through the long history of automotive development, the company that had something new could boast on it for years while the rest of the industry beavered away trying to catch up.

Get into any modern vehicle, and you’re riding on the shoulders of inventors who, decades ago, came up with things we now find commonplace—say, intermittent wipers or electric window lifts—often for companies that failed anyway. Being first with the idea is one thing; turning it into profits is often another.

So we’ve gathered this list of genuine firsts. Don’t worry, we’re not going deep into the car’s innards. The catalog of “firsts” along the road between the horseless carriage and today’s earthbound spaceship is full of steps that came and went in their time—there was a “first” car with distributor points, and good riddance to it. Before we had six- and seven-speed manual gearboxes and automatics with eight, nine, even 10 ratios, someone had to be first to offer three, four, and five. So?

For our purposes here, imagine that you’ve stepped into a typical 2016 crossover with a modern 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, all-wheel drive, and the most common conveniences and safety features. When did that start? Who got there first? Often, as with rearview mirrors and lots of engine technologies, the “first” car with a feature was built for racing. Others appear on one-off dream or concept cars that may predict the future but rarely represent it. General Motors envisioned what we’d now call “stability control” on a Corvette concept in the 1980s. Self-driving automobiles? There were concept cars forecasting that in the 1950s. So, while acknowledging such racing and concept antecedents, we’ve defined “first” here as meaning that a car company went into production with the invention.

Volvo XC90 plug in SUV foretells smarter cleaner automotive future

Volvos all-new XC90 three-row SUV the first car produced under ownership of Chinas Geely is a stunning entrant into semiautonomous plug-in hybrid field. Most new-car debuts are a whole lot of hype wrapped around four wheels and some steel. The 2016 Volvo XC90 is not one of those. The redesigned three-row SUV with a plug signifies a comeback for Volvo and a future of cleaner smarter safer cars. The turbo and supercharged twin engine has a battery powered motor that youll only notice when you pass by the gas station. It can drive itself at low speeds and is loaded with the kind of safety technology Volvo is using to deliver on its promise of making deathless cars by 2020. And its gorgeous. But inside and out it is a whole distinctive vehicle and not an amalgamation of Ford parts. The exterior is understated refinement. There isnt anything jaw-dropping about one particular feature but front to back there is a consistency that bestows confidence. Some luxury models try too hard with menacing grilles and coupelike roof lines that reek of the kind of arrogance that says Because I can. The XC90 is gorgeous in its oneness. The rounded rectangular grille is flanked by headlights split by T-shaped daytime running lights that Volvo describes as Thors Hammer. The body is clean down the sides with aluminum bands on the rocker panels complementing the aluminum integrated rails on the roof. The top-of-the-line Inscription trim comes with 20-inch alloy wheels but for another $750 the tester had 21-inch alloy wheels giving it a muscularity matched by the shoulders. The balance carries through on the inside. Real wood trim fills the doors center console and dash contrasting with nappa leather trim on the lower parts. The center controls consist of a small band of buttons including one for the glove box and above it a tablet-sized touch screen that controls everything from the digital owners manual to the self-perpendicular park function. Like Teslas large touch screen Volvos system doesnt leave you wanting dials and knobs. Since the XC90 is loaded with features the touch screen houses many functions. By the end of the week alternating between steering wheel controls and the touch screen was relatively mindless and natural. We never got used to the placement of the start/stop switch in the console but the car shuts itself off once in park. The console has ample storage as well as cup holders that can be hidden with a wood cover. The gear stick made of Swedish crystal might be the only ostentatious part of the car aside from the round Bowers and Wilkins speaker sticking out of the dash. The spartan design of the cabin the synthesis of hard and soft materials made me feel privileged each time I got in. The ventilated nappa leather seats with over a dozen comfort settings for both driver and passenger made that privilege very comfortable. The Swedish flag on the inseam was a nice touch too. The three seats in the second row all come on their own track making them versatile in accommodating seven passengers or reconfiguring the space for road trips. The second row also gets its own climate controls. The seats can collapse to make a table or footrest for third-row passengers or the latch on the top of the seat slides it forward for easy access to the third row. The latch is too firm for most grade-schoolers to activate on their own which is disappointing. The lack of power folding seats available in the Ford Explorer or Honda Pilot is an odd oversight. The third row has decent shoulder and hip room but legroom and headroom is best for kids. Adjusting the second-row seats will let the XC90 fit 6 adults comfortably for shorter journeys. Once on the road the XC90s hybrid powertrain is quiet smooth and effortlessly powerful. The electric motor supplements a direct-injection 2-liter engine that utilizes both a supercharger and a turbocharger in generating 400 horsepower and 472 pound-feet of torque. All that machinery is heavy but at just under 4400 pounds the XC90 is lighter than the BMW X5 and other luxury SUVs. Six drive modes in the all-wheel-drive family hauler are accessible via a scroll bar on the center console. At low speeds there is an off-road function we did not test. Power mode ratchets up the torque and strips off all that domestic civility so you can feel how the supercharger and turbo slough off any concerns about the cars weight. Volvo claims a 0-60 mph time of 5.8 seconds. Fun. We had more fun spending our time in Pure mode which provides up to 19 miles of all-electric range in silent operation. In the near future when most cars come with a plug-in option to optimize around-town use they should look at the XC90 as a model. It can be almost unnoticeable or owners can geek out with the heavy regen braking to squeeze more juice out of each mile. Switching between the modes which includes Save mode to preserve the battery for when you get off the highway for instance can be done at speed. Battery power is capped at 75 mph.
