ZF wins Auto Innovations Award for Hybrid Transmission

FRANKFURT: ZF, the German automotive solution provider has been awarded the Automotive Innovation Award for its hybrid Transmission.

The company announced that for its 8-speed plug-in hybrid transmission, ZF was recognized as the most innovative automotive supplier in the “driveline electrification” category. Representatives from the independent Center of Automotive Management (CAM) institute and audit firm Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC) presented company representatives with the award.

“Efficiency is one of ZF’s key development objectives, and the electrification of the driveline – whether in the form of a hybrid or an all-electric drive – is one of the company’s main levers to achieve this,” says Michael Hankel, Member of the Board of Management responsible for Production. “With our new 8-speed plug-in hybrid transmission we have made a groundbreaking step in this direction. The renowned Automotive Innovations Award once again highlights our innovative strength.”

The new plug-in hybrid transmission, which is seeing its first production application in the BMW X5 xDrive40e, is based on the advanced 8-speed automatic transmission (8HP). The torque converter in its housing is replaced with an electric motor generating up to 90 kW peak power and 45 kW continuous power – virtually without taking up any additional installation space.

Karma Automotive 'Makes Up' Name Of Its First New Car -

http://dublin.cashforcarsireland.com/karma-automotive-makes-name-first-new-car/

Last fall, the current owners of the upstart automaker formerly known as Fisker Automotive changed its name to Karma Automotive, after the company’s one and only vehicle. Today it revealed what will be the name of its first all-new model – Revero – which is admittedly a badge that’s cobbled together from spare (albeit rare) parts, so to speak.

“We elected to ‘make up’ a word so its meaning is consistent with our Karma brand, and also be unique, memorable and available worldwide for registration and trademarking,” says Jim Taylor, Karma’s chief marketing officer.

Officially, a Karma press release says the name Revero is a mishmash of two Latin words, “Re,” which means constant effort and continuous improvement, and “Vero,” for truth and honesty. Unfortunately the release did not go into detail regarding the Revero itself, other than to note it will be Karma’s flagship model. (Some sources suggests it will be an updated version of the original Karma PHEV.) The company’ website hints the car will “deliver a unique combination of advanced-technology with timeless design, built for discerning individuals that want to experience a car,” which, to be honest, is pretty much the de facto definition of a high-end luxury car these days.

The original Fisker Automotive was founded in 2007 by Henrik Fisker, a Danish-born auto stylist who is perhaps best known for designing the BMW Z8 and Aston Martin DB9, along with business partner with Bernhard Koehler to (perhaps optimistically in hindsight), “forge a new and radical perspective on what is possible in the automotive world.”

Its only product was the dramatically styled $115,000 Fisker Karma plug-in hybrid sports sedan. Though it seemed “new and radical” at the time, its sleekly carved sheetmetal, and not its underling technology, was what turned heads when it debuted for the 2011 model year.

With rather unimpressive fuel economy, Fisker’s Karma was relegated to second-tier status to Tesla which burst onto the scene at about the same time with the far superior all-electric Model S. The car found few takers, and company subsequently went bankrupt. (Fisker subsequently teamed with auto industry veterans Bob Lutz and Gilbert Villarreal to transform the sleek hybrid into a Chevy Corvette-powered eight-cylinder performance sedan to be called the Destino.) Whatever was left of Fisker’s original company was sold off, with financial backing provided by Chinese billionaire Lu Guanqiu, who reportedly launched his career by making bicycles.

THE dawn of the autonomous driving era is influencing even the most traditional automaking segments — interiors. Hands-free, foot-free controls will totally transform the driver-passenger dynamics within the cabin. Yanfeng Automotive Interiors calls it a “better life on board.”

The company emerged as the world’s largest supplier of automotive interiors last year following its merger with US-based Johnson Controls. The recent China debut of its Innovation Demonstrator 2016 concept car in Shanghai offers a preview of driving comfort and convenience in the first-generation of autonomous cars expected by 2025.

Switching between different driving modes requires transformer-like interiors. With the steering wheel retracting into the instrument panel and the driver seat moving back, more room can be created for the driver. Every seat can rotate 18 degrees outward to allow face-to-face integration of everyone on board.

The end of driver fatigue in autonomous cars means the advent of more personal enjoyment or engagement, now available at a two-way coolbox, and a built-in rotating table for eating, reading or working. LED ambient lighting placed seamlessly along the entire instrument panel and doors tunes its hue according to the auto-drive mode. It is all a pleasant setting until the driver receives a sudden wake-up call about an imminent danger, only to find his seat and steering wheel not in positions for manual control. Yanfeng said under such circumstances, the car will respond with an emergency stopping system. The car’s interior takes a short time to revert back to manual control, giving those on board a chance to recover from the shock.

VW expected to offer to buy back nearly 500,000 U.S. diesel vehicles -

http://dublin.cashforcarsireland.com/vw-expected-offer-buy-back-nearly-500000-u-s-diesel-vehicles/

Volkswagen AG and U.S. officials have reached a framework deal under which the automaker would offer to buy back almost 500,000 diesel cars that used sophisticated software to evade U.S. emissions rules, two people briefed on the matter said Wednesday.

The German automaker is expected to tell a federal judge in San Francisco on Thursday that it has agreed to offer to buy back up to 500,000 2.0-liter diesel vehicles sold in the U.S. that exceeded legally allowable emission levels, the people said.

That would include versions of the Jetta sedan, the Golf compact and the Audi A3 sold since 2009. The buyback offer does not apply to the bigger, 80,000 3.0-liter diesel vehicles also found to have exceeded U.S. pollution limits, including Audi and Porsche SUV models, the people said.

U.S.-listed shares of Volkswagen rose nearly 6 percent to $30.95 following the news.

VW in September admitted to cheating on emissions tests for 11 million vehicles worldwide since 2009, damaging the automaker’s global image.

As part of the settlement with U.S. authorities including the EPA, Volkswagen has also agreed to a compensation fund for owners, a third person briefed on the terms said.

The compensation fund is expected to represent more than $1 billion on top of the cost of buying back the vehicles, but it is not clear how much each owner might receive, the person said.

Volkswagen may also offer to repair polluting diesel vehicles if U.S. regulators approve the proposed fix, the sources said.

A VW spokeswoman, the EPA and the Justice Department declined to comment Wednesday.

VW will pay cash compensation to owners who either sell their vehicles back or get them fixed, one of the people briefed on the matter said. Owners selling back their vehicles will get an additional cash payment on top of receiving the estimated value of the vehicles from before the emissions scandal became public in September 2015.

Owners are expected to have around two years to decide whether to sell back vehicles or get them repaired. It is not clear whether VW will be allowed to resell vehicles they buy back, the source said.

The framework deal with U.S. officials was reached after lengthy talks in recent days at the Washington law office of Robert Mueller. The former FBI director is the court appointed mediator named to help settle more than 500 civil suits filed against VW.

The talks, which continued over the week, included all the government agencies and lead plaintiffs attorneys suing VW.

Some elements of the settlement are still being worked out and details are not expected to be announced Thursday at a court hearing, the people briefed on the matter said. The final deal could still change before it is officially announced, they said.

U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer in March gave VW until Thursday “to announce a concrete proposal for getting the polluting vehicles off the road.”

Breyer said in March the “proposal may include a vehicle buy-back plan or a fix approved by the relevant regulators that allows the cars to remain on the road with certain modifications.”

A final settlement is also expected to include an environmental remediation fund to address excess pollution emitted by the U.S. vehicles since 2009.

It is not clear if the deal will resolve the U.S. Justice Department’s civil suit filed in January against VW or if VW will agree to pay a civil penalty. VW also faces ongoing criminal investigations by the Justice Department and other prosecutors around the world.

Separately, Germany’s Die Welt newspaper reported Wednesday that the deal to settle the case would involve it paying each affected customer $5,000. But a person briefed on the matter told Reuters that no decisions on how individual compensation will be awarded have been made.

In December, VW said it was creating an independent claims program for owners of vehicles with excess emissions.

It named compensation expert Ken Feinberg, who administered funds for the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, BP Plc Deepwater Horizon oil spill and General Motors ignition switch crashes, to create and administer the program.

Cash on wheels: how to hock your car -

Cash on wheels: how to hock your car -

http://dublin.cashforcarsireland.com/cash-wheels-hock-car/

Car hocking, for instance, is set to grow in popularity as more and more people learn about its short and long-term advantages. It basically entails pawning your vehicle in exchange for cash, with the possibility of buying it back once things return to financial normality. As with any type of loan, however, it’s essential that you get to know all the aspects of the deal before signing the dotted line. So here’s what you need to look after when hocking your car:

How it works

Pretty much like any other pawning procedure. You simply go to a pawnshop and request an evaluation of your vehicle. Make sure you choose a professional pawnbroker (like this one) who specializes in car hocking if you want to get fair appraisals and great deals. The lending company will then make you an offer based on your car’s wholesale value and previous usage. Accepting it means instant access to a decent sum of money that you’ll have to repay in an agreed-upon time frame. If you don’t manage to do so or if you simply choose to forfeit your buy-back option, the car will be considered as having been sold to the pawnbroker.

Qualification requirements

For the most part it’s pretty straightforward: any car proprietor who can prove his or her ownership of the vehicle in question with a lien-free auto title and government-issued identification. Some companies may also have minimum age requirements or stipulate the need for additional paperwork such as proof of residence and proof of income.

Common hocking options

Depending on the policies of the lending company, there are usually two ways to go about hocking your car. You can opt for a storage clause, which means that your vehicle will be kept in the custody of the pawnbroker until the loan is paid in full. Alternatively, you can choose to hold onto your vehicle and simply cede your car title to the pawnbroker. This means that you’ll still get to keep driving it, but the car’s ownership won’t revert back to you until you’ve finished paying your loan. In such cases additional car insurance may be required.

Contracts & legalities

Despite being completely safe and legal, hocking your car is still a major financial decision. It is of the utmost importance that you pay close attention to the contract that you’re about to sign before giving your loan the green light. Pawning isn’t subjected to the regular usury laws that govern credit card companies and banks, so you might sometimes find things like ballooning interest rates and strict penalties squeezed in amidst the fine print. For instance, hocking your car with a 3% interest rate might sound like a good deal initially, but if the contract actually stipulates that the interest rate is per month then that means that you’re staring down a staggering 36% interest rate spread out over 1 year. As for penalties, most professional lending companies will let the occasional late payment slide, but some can be very strict about this aspect and will actually take your car away if you blow a single deadline. Finally, the mitigation aspect is important since you’ll want to know exactly what options will be at your disposal on the off chance of things turning sour between the two parties.

Comparison to alternatives

While car hocking isn’t for everyone, it does present a series of advantages when compared to other traditional loan options. For one, it’s really fast. You can be in and out of a pawnbroker’s office within minutes if everything goes smooth, much quicker than it would take to actually sell your used car outright. It’s also impervious to bad credit ratings. Any outstanding debts will not be counted against you when you’re putting down a valuable asset like a car or a motorbike. What’s more, car hocking is a completely private transaction that you can carry out in order to get cash without having to resort to friends and family or going through any complicated loan procedures. Interest levels vary greatly, but they’re still often quite better than the ones afforded by payday loans and other similar emergency options.

In conclusion, car hocking is a smart and efficient solution for anyone who needs access to short-term cash quickly. As with any other loan, getting the money you need is only half the equation, so always keep in mind that you’ll have to eventually repay your debt in one way or another. Still, the ability of getting back on your own two feet is definitely something worth doing and investing in.

Tesla Is Redefining The Automotive Industry -

Tesla Is Redefining The Automotive Industry -

http://dublin.cashforcarsireland.com/tesla-redefining-automotive-industry/

In a tough, competitive automotive market, Tesla broke away from the norm.

It is a tough automotive market out there. There are multiple brands that come out with great, quality products. The kinds of vehicles that are available around $25,000 is astonishing, especially when considering the level of safety, reliability, and fun factor that can be had. Manufacturers such as Ford, Chevrolet, Toyota, Subaru, Mazda, and Honda, just to name a few, have decades of engineering experience. Increasing safety standards and EPA ratings have only made things tougher for more traditional automotive manufacturers, but Tesla has seemed to embrace it, and excel.

Just look at the automotive market. Sure, the Nissan Leaf helped bring affordable EV power to the masses, but it’s Tesla’s product line that gets the eyeballs. Why? Look at the hybrids and electric vehicles out on the market. How many of them look like eggshells on wheels? Most of the designs are made for aerodynamic purposes. But, glance over to anything made from Tesla, and they were able to draw attractive designs that still have low coefficient of drag to enhance range. On top of that, none of their cars can actually be considered slow. The Roadster, Model X, Model S, and projected Model 3, all in base trims, are all 0-60 mile per hour vehicles in 6 seconds or less.

Ford has built a driverless car that can see in the dark -http://dublin.cashforcarsireland.com/ford-built-driverless-car-can-see-dark/ Driverless cars are already proving an impressive technology but now Ford has taken it a step further by successfully testing an autonomous car in complete darkness. The car a Fusion Hybrid was able to navigate a lap of a closed circuit at night with its headlights off something the car manufacturer called a demonstration of the technologys ability to operate beyond the limits of human drivers. The technology involved in carrying out the test is called LiDAR a set of sensors that create a 3D map of the world around it as well as the road and can work in conjunction with the sensors and cameras currently used in driverless cars. However unlike the cameras which rely on light LiDARs sensors do not. Jim McBride Ford technical leader for autonomous vehicles said: Thanks to LiDAR the test cars arent reliant on the sun shining nor cameras detecting painted white lines on the asphalt. In fact LiDAR allows autonomous cars to drive just as well in the dark as they do in the light of day. (Ford) High-resolution 3D maps complete with information about the road including markings and the surface are combined with the LiDAR sensors to tell the car exactly where it is on the road and respond accordingly. Radar data is also used. Google is also currently testing self-driving cars in California while several major manufacturers including Audi BMW Mercedes and Tesla are all known to be using driverless technology in some capacity. Ford said it plans to triple its own autonomous vehicle fleet to 30 cars this year testing on roads in California Arizona and Michigan in the US. Three Ways Automotive Tech Will Reshape Our Lives Beyond Cars -

Three Ways Automotive Tech Will Reshape Our Lives Beyond Cars -

http://dublin.cashforcarsireland.com/three-ways-automotive-tech-will-reshape-lives-beyond-cars/

There’s a lot going on in the world of cars these days.

Uber, Lyft and many other rideshare companies continue to battle it out for market share and disruptive dominance, leaving the centuries old tradition of taxi services to die out a slow, miserable death.

The big car manufacturers (along with outsiders from the tech industry) are on a race to make driverless cars a reality.

Elon Musk’s Tesla just stomped through the electric car market with whopping pre-order earnings for a car that won’t even be on the road for at least a year at the earliest.

It’s an exciting time for cars and transportation as technology slowly penetrates the form factor of these once “dumb” vessels. And as innovation fuels the sector, the mad dash of one company to beat the other results in huge cultural transformations that provide solutions to other parts of life unrelated to the automobile itself.

Elon Musk’s Tesla is steamrolling the electric car market. But it might flatten home energy, too. Image: Kavi Guppta.

Let’s look at three interesting areas where automotive tech is reshaping life beyond the car:

1. WiFi everywhere

Despite the progress we’re making with how we produce intelligent cars, access to stable and affordable WiFi is still a problem–especially in countries like India where infrastructure is lacking in so many areas. We’ve launched balloons into the sky, turned old pay phones into hotspots, and more. Now Ola, Uber’s major rival in India, hasannounced plans to turn its fleet of active cars into roaming WiFi hubs. It’s another experiment in the journey to making WiFi in cities accessible from anywhere. Each iteration will unfold new learnings to improve the approach companies and municipalities enact.

2. Recover idle real estate

Finding good parking is one of the worst things about driving in any city. Studies show that 30-60 percent of cars are mostly driving around in circles looking for a spot to claim. That burns 47,000 gallons of gas and creates 730 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year. How wasteful is that? Driverless cars might change the need for parking, especially if ridesharing has anything to do with it. Imagine this: your driverless car drops you off at work, and rather than parking itself and sitting idle for eight hours, it zips off to find someone else in need of immediate transport. These cars will never have to rest (and if they’re electric, they won’t be as harmful to the environment) or take up more space than necessary. All those ugly parking lots that dot the landscape? They’re freed up to become new urban centers for parks, recreation, and living.

3. Renewable energy

A major concern of electric cars has been battery life. How far can a car go before it needs a recharge? As Elon Musk works furiously to improve the function of electric vehicles, Tesla’s iterations on its automotive electric batteries have found a new use case in powering our homes. The technology performs the same task of balancing recharge via solar energy, or shifting capacity if tied to a regular power grid. Early trials will set you back between $10,000-$18,000, but continued experiments will undoubtedly bring down those steep entry prices. In addition, the experiments have the potential to fill Tesla’s (and Musk’s) pockets with plenty of cash should the venture be successful. It helps to have a head start with existing resources and evidence under your roof.

Like any cultural zenith–the space race or first and second world wars for example–our ambition and drive to succeed results in fascinating use cases for unrelated problems. The automotive industry’s progress is just another contribution to our constant transformation.

Fiat heir Lapo Elkann aims to be a key player in car customization -

http://dublin.cashforcarsireland.com/fiat-heir-lapo-elkann-aims-key-player-car-customization/

Lapo Elkann: “The mission is to be the fashion, style and design house for everything in motion.”

Lapo Elkann has re-entered the auto business with Garage Italia Customs, a Milan-based company that specializes in custom bodywork, paint and upholstery. Elkann, whose great-grandfather Giovanni Agnelli co-founded Fiat, has held numerous roles in the family business. As head of brand promotion he campaigned to transform the 3+1 concept into what would become the rebooted Fiat 500, which has been one of Europe’s top-selling minicars for nearly a decade. He left Fiat in 2005 after nearly dying of a drug overdose. Two years later he started Italia Independent, a lifestyle and clothing brand featuring Italian products. Last November, he opened Garage Italia. Elkann detailed his plans for the business and shared his views on the auto industry in an interview with Automotive News EuropeEditor Luca Ciferri.

What is the mission for Garage Italia?

The mission is to be the fashion, style and design house for everything in motion. We have customized cars, motorcycles, helicopters, private jets and boats. Automobiles are the core of our activity because I am mad about cars. Secondly, cars account for about $93 billion of the global $590 billion in annual spending for customization.

What are your key goals?

My first goal is to reach breakeven in about three to four years on the roughly 8 million euros we’ve invested so far. Long term, the sky is the limit. The number of wealthy people is growing worldwide and they increasingly want something tailor made to properly express their tastes and dreams.

Is there is any link between Garage Italia and Ferrari’s Tailor Made customization program you helped set up?

I had the great opportunity to work on Ferrari’s Tailor Made project as well as on their one-off program. I really loved that and I learned a lot. But, with all due respect, Ferrari Tailor Made is [customization] 2.0 while Garage Italia is 5.0. Why? Because we have no constrains on the brands and type of vehicles [we can work on]. Everything that moves could be customized by us. We have worked for BMW, Fiat, Mercedes, Jeep, and Smart, just to name a few.

When will Garage Italia expand?

We will open a second atelier in Miami, probably in the second half. Then we will add something in the Middle East.

What is you ultimate goal at Garage Italia?

What we currently do: cooperate with exemplary Italian companies such as Brembo, Pirelli and Alcantara to create products that offer state-of-the-art technology and perfect beauty. To do so, we will continue to have cross-fertilization with the art, product design and fashion worlds.

What is the price range to have Garage Italia customize a car?

From 1,000 euros for a partial exterior wrapping to 6,000 euros for a full wrapping. Custom painting ranges between 5,000 and 15,000 euros. The same range applies to revising an interior, but you can easily reach 300,000 euros is you select special treatments such as a carbon fiber instrument cluster wrapped with marble and a handbrake lever with the same finish as a samurai’s katana sword handle.

Do you work on the powertrain?

That is not our core job. We want to promote Italian craftsmanship to make a vehicle’s look and finish unique. If the customer wants higher performances, we recommend high-end tuners.

What about one-off units?

My drawer is full of dream cars and one day I would like to be able to build some of them. However, undergoing the full homologation process for a one-off unit would be too much for a company that is less than a year old. That being said, my motto is never say never. So maybe we could start by doing some custom-designed cars for the movie industry.

With your brother, John, and sister, Ginevra, you are a powerful shareholder in the parent company that controls both Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and Ferrari. What does this mean to you?

I am extremely happy that my brother is running these businesses. He is very good at it. This lets me be an independent entrepreneur who can follow his personal interests on a daily basis thanks to a wise brother who takes care of the family belongings.

What will the auto business be in two product cycles, say around 2030?

Since I do not work at an automaker anymore, I only have indirect insights based on the things I hear and read. I believe that autonomous driving and car sharing will continue to grow in importance. Cars have to become much more environmentally friendly because society cannot support unsustainable mobility anymore. The question is: Will the solutions come from traditional automakers or from disruptors such as Apple and Google? The automakers that will survive and thrive will be the ones that can leverage these new technologies. Those left behind by these disruptors sooner or later will face extinction.

What would you say if an automaker offered you a full-time job tomorrow?

Right now I would say, “No thanks.” I have 310 people working for me at Italian Independent Group and another 40 at Garage Italia. These people are my daily priority. Once these companies grow and are able to stand on their own two feet, I could eventually consider a full-time job either in the auto industry or in another industry.
